Re: Gripe thread
(Anonymous) 2024-01-23 04:28 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, this is the part that gets me - the direct contrast between that and the response to Ukraine, where almost all of the nearby countries stepped up to take in refugees who needed a safe place to go.

Re: Gripe thread
(Anonymous) 2024-01-23 07:50 am (UTC)(link)The problem is not just that the neighboring countries don't want to take in Palestinians. The problem is also that the Palestinian population doesn't want to leave, with some justification - this is after all the place where their families have lived for generations.
One of the key grievances on the Palestinian side is the displacement, expulsion and dispossession of Palestinians from the time of the foundation of the state of Israel to the present. And one of the lessons from that experience has been that, if they leave Palestine, they will not be permitted to return. A large part of their political goal is to establish a viable society for themselves to live within the boundaries of historical Palestine. So trying to leave Palestine would just be totally at odds with all of their fundamental goals and what they want. Leaving Palestine as refugees represents precisely the kind of displacement which they are against.
And obviously, there are other reasons why neighboring Arab countries haven't been willing to take in refugees or be helpful in various ways. But like... expelling Palestinians as refugees from Palestine is not generally a solution that would be welcomed by the Palestinians even if countries were willing to take them. Also it would arguably be a crime against humanity I think although I'm not quite sure on that one.
