What're you reading? What's on the top of your TBR pile?

Re: Books

(Anonymous) 2024-01-24 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Current book: The Year 1000: what life was like at the turn of the first millenium by Robert Lacey

My TBR pile is a mess and nothing is ever at the top. It's more like a TBR swamp and my mood determines what floats to the top. What's next is a mystery!

Working on a Lord of the Rings reread. In the bath I'm reading Chicken Soup for the Soul: lessons Learned from my Cat.

And I bought this book with Christmas money based on a bunch of recommendations that I'm just about to start reading: Lady Justice: Women, the Law, and the Battle to Save America.

I've finally gotten around go reading 'Lolita.'

Two things that I've found surprising (in a good way) about it: Nabokov goes out of his way to show that Humbert is an asshole in pretty much all things. He's a miserable, pretentious twat -- morbidly fascinating, but completely unsympathetic, the sort of man you yearn to punch. Second: it's made so obvious that this thing he's doing is horrific and fucked up, and that Dolores is decidedly not having a good time. I'd gotten the impression from a lot of things I've heard that I was going to have to gird myself against it reading like a justification of Humbert's actions, but it really, really doesn't. Even Humbert himself knows it's not right, despite his moments of braying about "society" and "nymphets." He's a contemptible human being, teetering over the edge of self-awareness and, in his derangement, desperately trying to hold himself back from it.

I just finished Julia by Peter Straub.

Up next is Christmas and Other Horrors. Only a month late. Lol.

Then I might try a non horror book.

Vampire Hunter D Vol 11: Pale Fallen Angel Pt1&2, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

My physical TBR is at 143 and I have Her Radiant Curse by Elizabeth Lim on hold at the library for when it comes in (it's a new release so they're waiting on their copies to come in).

I'm almost done with the Time Traveler's Guide to Medieval England, and next on my TBR is Packing For Mars by Mary Roach. I LOOOVE Mary Roach and it took forever to get my hands on this.

Gutshot by Amelia Gray and Gideon the Ninth are at the top of my TBR rn.

Finished reading Y/N by Esther Yi - which I had gone into thinking that it was going to be a a silly bandom based story and ended up being a lot more surreal than I had expected, which I ended up liking by the end of it as weird as it was (though the way its written at the very beginning, I can see why people dropped the book before getting any further).

Still chugging through WeaveWorld. Yup. It's good but if I weren't reading it for a purpose I'd have bounced off in the first couple hundred pages.

Started The Little Wartime Library by Kate Thompson today. My TBR list is too long but latest additions to it were Reflections in a Golden Eye by Carson Smith McCuller and Rob Halford's autobio.

Going to read The Lies of Locke Lamora. The whole series came highly recommended, I'm hopeful this will be a new series to spend some quality time with.

MMOs (and other games threads)

(Anonymous) 2024-01-24 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
So I know a few people play ff14. Anyone tried TESO? I want to try but there's no free trial.

What you guya are playing? I tried No Mans Sky and Subnautica but deleted both after an hour of playtime.

currently trying out Yakuza, since it seems to be hype in some of my fandom circles and 1-5 were on sale for five bucks each last week. it's okay, just hate one of the biggest side characters you have to fight 500 times (literally) plus I'm super bad at fighting mechanics that require hardcore blocking/parrying to make it through the hardest battles.

I was also wanting to try TESO, but all I hear is about people who want to try it but barely seen anyone that actually has it... And even watching gameplay doesn't give me much about it.

I play No Man's Sky semi-frequently, and recently tried an old mmo called Perpetuum (mostly for the visuals.) I got Elite Dangerous on Epic for free but haven't tried it yet, but it looks very cool.

I've actually been getting back into the og Guild Wars lately. Older and limited/dated in a lot of ways, but still surprisingly fun.

Every time I think maybe I should step away from Flight Rising, they come out with a new breed I love. The latest is my absolute favorite. But then again, I've said that about the last 3. Loving.

I'm messing around in Cyberpunk 2077 until Persona 3 Reload comes out.

Currently playing Stardew Valley, but I think I'm going to drop it once I rebuild the Community Center (very soon!).
After that... IDK it's either The Darkside Detective or Night in the Woods. I need some contained games with tight stories now.

I hop between ff14 and WoW because my guild is still active and I like to play with them, they make killing bosses fun. Otherwise I've been playing yet another game of BG3 because I love it so much(I'm smooching Lae'zel this time!).

Food

(Anonymous) 2024-01-24 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Try any new recipes or new products? Were they good? Or did a familiar dish turn out amazing this time?

Yesterday I cut into the best avocado ever. Perfect texture, smaller seed, no bruising or dark areas, just lovely green. Perfect for fork mashing, and not messy at all. So I made a small amount of guacamole right then and there.

I also bought some Valentine's candy - the Dark Strawberry Lindt truffles were ended up being way better than I thought they would!
