You mean you just... listen to whatever instructions narrators give you as a reader without being influenced by what the rest of the text shows? This isn't a dig at you, I'm genuinely curious about how you're able to do this. If a character said not to think of them as a person and then acted like a person, I'd automatically start thinking of them as a person. Not a human person necessarily, but a being equal to a person in terms of the value of their life, story, feelings, etc.
