What animal would you never want to see in the wild?

(Anonymous) 2024-01-31 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I came way too close to a mountain lion and grizzly encounter and I never want to do that again. I didn't actually see the animals, but there were tracks and fresh scat and it make hiking terrifying.

I got to see two of them when they were sleeping! That would be my recommended method of shark encounter.

Skunk. No good can come from that.

Aw, they're even cuter than armadillos! They won't spray you unless they feel threatened, so as long as you don't approach too quickly they will generally ignore you and go about their business and move off if they feel you're too close.

Vulture or hyenas. Even in a world where I could safely watch them, watching animals eat dead, rotting things would be just gross.

I've seen vultures in the wild. I'd rather have them around than have a pile of dead animals around.

Vultures don't deserve the bad rep they get. I've seen turkey vultures gliding in the air on a mountain during a hike and I thought they were quite beautiful. Coming across them while they eat long dead animals seems actually pretty rare.

I've fed vultures at a falconry centre. They're incredibly strong. Agreeing with everyone who says they do a good job in the wild. Better than flies. I've seen a carcass in the wild that had anthrax. There were hundreds of vultures in the trees around it but not one of them would touch it; it was buzzing with flies. We didn't hang around.

Oddly I read the subject line and was trying to decide if my answer would be mountain lion or grizzly LOL They’re incredibly terrifying and will attack person on sight. I encountered fresh grizzly scat a couple times in the front range of the Rockies but lucky never had any encounters. I live in black bear country and have a camping trip later this year in grizzly country and I’m really nervous about the bears. I can do everything right but if someone near me or who has recently been where I’m going didn’t practice safe food storage, it could be fatal for me. Too many people think Ursacks and Bear Vaults are as safe as really bear canisters.

Polar bear, mountain lion and grizzly. For water animals, sharks and humboldt squid.

There isn't anything I wouldn't want to safely see. For what I would not want to suddenly encounter with no way to retreat or defend, it would be a bear or anything rabid. Rabies scares the shite out of me.

Alligators, crocodiles, Tasmanian Giant crabs, tarantula hawks, lampreys, Queensland Whistling tarantulas, polar bears, hippos, wild dogs, and Madagascar hissing cockroaches.

Animals I have actually seen in the wild that I'm fine with never seeing again: coyotes, a sidewinder (watching it move from a distance was cool, but no), a javelina, a moose, and scorpions.

I've seen an alligator in the wild. Some fool poked it with a stick.

Some people are so stupid that you wonder how they've survived thus far.

Swamp puppies are mostly harmless to humans, unless you have a dog or a small child with you that is snack size to them. You can pretty safely prod and poke even the big ones though. They'll just move away. We're the wrong size for them to safely eat us, and they know we're too lazy to eat them. They just kinda shuffle away out of poking range.

Guessing you’re more of an indoorsy type.

Any type of crab, really, because I have a phobia. But especially the likes of coconut crabs or Japanese spider crabs. Nightmare fuel to the max.
