That was intentional? I had just assumed that Verne just didn't know what a league was and wanted something that sounded cool, weird, and watery, and didn't care that their arbitrarily large number was completely imposable. I'm just too used to modern authors, not mentioning Rowling in particular or anything, just being really bad at math or scientific realities and using words and concepts without care for their actual meanings. .

I think Verne was around before that was forgivable, also he created many science fiction conventions.

Verne had decent scientific knowledge for a non-specialist at the time. Very doubtful he'd make a sloppy mistake like that.
