Zukka = Gay Zutara

Honestly, as someone who grew up with zutara, this was my first thought when seeing the massive amounts of zuko/Sokka. I mean what else could it be?

IT'S TRUE AND YOU SHOULD SAY IT

so sad that we got a gay shipping revival and it STILL wasn't zukaang

Not ayrt, but damn did that dragon scene do nothing for the shippers ? I honestly though zuko/aang would have more shippers ;0;

It's about the tropes. Fire x Water(Ice) is a tried and true trope with many subtropes that everyone knows and a lot of people love. Fire x Air isn't really that much of a thing tropewise so it's less interesting to most shippers.
It's the same reason those same people tend to put Aang and Toph together. Earth x Air might not as famous as Fire x Water, but it's still opposite elements.

I couldn't ship Aang with anyone because he just looked so young.
queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (Default)

It's funny because when I rewatched a few years ago, I was REALLY feeling Zukaang. They're the most resonant dynamic in the show, afaic.

Then again, I never cared one way or another about Zutara. My fire/water ship was Azula/Sokka and my preferred Katara ship was Jet LMFAO.

But anyway, I just know thatf I ever start reading ATLA fanworks, I'll go for Zukaang. Or Azula/Ty Lee...

I mean... they have a very different relationship and vibe to me. The fire-and-ice/water theming is still there, sans bending on one side, and the enemies to lovers, but they very much have their own thing, especially once you get to the Boiling Isle field trip.

And even before that, like... there's this contrast in the ways that they're both living in the shadow of a father who feels larger than life-- Zuko who was exiled by his and struggles for approval he'll never get, Sokka who had to stay behind and be the man of the house (/tribe) when his left, struggling to live up to the IDEA of who his father needed him to be. Zuko's sometimes-life-and-death level contentious relationship with his little sister (and his feelings about how she's The Favorite) vs Sokka's relationship with HIS little sister, with endless squabbling but a complete willingness to fight to protect each other (but his feelings about how she has special powers he doesn't).
