I don't think the dress is supposed to be taken seriously. I think it's supposed to seem ridiculous -- and that feeling that it's ridiculous, that it's silly, asks as a contrast to the murder that's taking place. Your emotions don't line up with what's really happening, just as the emotions of the cult members don't.

For me, the movie tone goes between near-farcical absurd comedy and plain horror, which is a combination Ari Aster does well, though I found it worked better in Hereditary than Midsommar, which I consider a weaker film. The dress is definitely very jarring, I liked how disorienting the mood and colors were in this section personally.

Yup. I am not even fan of the movie, but it intentionally plays with contrast
