I can only speak to my experiences. In my current fandom, majority of fics I read and write are smut fics. My suspicion of a fic being for clout more than a desire to write smut tends to be a fic where the smut feels really by the numbers. Like, I am reading a lot familiar actions, scene/story setups, even phrases and word patterns that echo a bit too much like other smut pieces.
Also, if a writer gets a little obsessed or worked over their stats.

There are already a lot of smut fics, many are really similar to each other, so it makes me mad when I see a smut fic that gets a lot of attention and love and it reads to me like the author just stole a bunch prose from smut writers and plastered popular ship names onto the piece and then they keep coming out with their paint by numbers smut fics because they keep getting all this clout.

And it's like, actual new and interesting smut pieces are getting glossed over because some douche wanting attention is spewing out their lazy drivel that everyone is really into.
