Characterization is kinda the whole point of writing

If you're talking about stories, certainly it takes up a good part of it, but I wouldn't say it's the whole point.

Uh, yeah it is. Unless you're technical writing or writing non-fiction. Most people in fandom are here because characters resonated with them. We're not here for the plot; we're here for specific characters. That's what fanfic IS: put that guy into situations. The situations don't really matter, it's what the situations can tell us or let us explore about his character. The character is the whole point.

Just because fic contains characters (and often shipping such characters) doesn't mean fic isn't written for other reasons.

Sometimes people want to add to the lore, and the characters only make up a part of it. Just because you're not interested in reading it doesn't mean people don't write it.

Sometimes they do, which is why I said "most". But notice the preponderance of coffee shop AUs, highschool AUs, royalty AUs, soulmate AUs, zombie AUs, etc etc. The VAST majority of fanfic is not adding to the plot or playing in the world with OCs. IT'S THE CHARACTERS.

And from the very fact that this person wants their characterization to be well done, they consider their characters to be an integral part of their story. If they were doing OCs and just playing in the world, why bother having an AI create your characterization for you? They obviously need the characterization. They just don't want to put in the work. Which... that skill is kinda the point...
