People need to learn to mind their own business.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Makes me wonder if there was something else going on.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
wish this would happen more to people who were found to be abusive, rapists or caught with child porn

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Right? I know it’s different people involved but it makes me go ??? that Sakurai was instadropped for cheating while the Rurouni Kenshin mangaka gets a pass for having so much CSEM that they thought he was a distributor.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
WHAT. I remember when the Watsuki Nobuhiro stuff came out, but I had no idea he was still successful. I just looked it up and apparently he was only fined what amounts to 1.5k USD, and then continued work like nothing happened. What the fuck.

ayrt

he was exactly who i was thinking of when i made the comment.

priorities, people.

It just goes to show you that Japan has very different morés.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
It's only very recently that child porn or even child sexual abuse within the family has been considered such a horrible thing rather than a shame on the victim (which is still true in many places) so I wouldn't get too "Japan is different" about it.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
You could possibly say that about child sexual abuse, but possessing child porn has not just recently been considered a horrible thing. It's been illegal for decades in the West.

Japan is absolutely different in this regard. The age of consent was 13 until last year, and possessing CSAM has only been illegal there since 2014, under a law that's weaker than the laws in Canada, the US, most of Europe, most of Latin America, etc. Do you think that if Watsuki lived in, say, London instead of Tokyo, and had been arrested there instead, he would have gotten off with just a fine and no jail time?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The age of consent federally was 13, but each region had a much higher age of consent. It’s a myth that the actual age of consent is 13 in Japan.

You can't simultaneously acknowledge the existence of something and also declare that it's a myth.

But you're also not touching at all the bit that's really at issue, which is the treatment of child porn. Did he or did he not get off with a fine for a crime that elsewhere would put him in prison? Did his reputation remain intact or not for a crime that would end his career elsewhere? Are we just to ignore that for the sake of pretending All Countries Are Exactly the Same? Shall we declare that the rest of the world is as riddled with gun violence as the US, instead of acknowledging that the US, in that regard, is different? Shall we declare that all countries treat women and LGBT people are poorly as Saudi Arabia does so we don't have to acknowledge a difference there? Perhaps Norway is as authoritarian as China, and Chile has the same percentage of Muslim inhabitants as Iran, and Canada has many Roman Catholics as Italy, and North Korea is a social democracy known for its fine wine, and Spanish is the primary language of Singapore, and each of these nations are completely indistinguishable from one another.

It does seem weird when people are apparently fine with still working with people like the Kenshin guy. Though personally, if someone lied to their girlfriend about not being married for ten years, I wouldn't want to work with someone that dishonest, either. I remember the Mononoke film people specifically said they were replacing him because what he did jarred with the subject and themes of their film.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
That’s fair. I would expect that he would get picked up less often. But not to the extent that it seems to have been

... I find out they're making a Mononoke movie due to a secret about the voice actor being a cheater...

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Lol how does this jar with the film, the medicine seller character he voiced is literally two-faced.
I'll gave to think about watching it now, actually. Changing him in this role messes up my perception of the character.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
? The medicine seller isn't two-faced in the metaphorical sense, though? The film is about women who have been used by men, and they didn't want their main character to be voiced by a man who used women.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
It was a joke. And no, not in the metaphorical sense, hence the use of the word literally. He literally has two faces/personalities/identities.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, cheating is one of those things where I feel like it really isn't anyone's business outside of the people involved, because we don't know what was going on within the relationship. I've known plenty of people who were in relationships that looked fine and happy from the outside but were actually anything but, and having learned about that after the fact I can only say that if one of the people involved had cheated, I would not have blamed them for it at all.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-26 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
If you want to screw other people, get divorced first. If you're being abused, leave first don't get into another relationship. If you're bored, grow up, get therapy and then if you can't resolve things, separate pending divorce. Cheating is wrong.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-26 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. But it’s a wrong I’m not involved in.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, he's basically on his redemption tour this year so I think he'll be fine. But I'll also forever think him a shit human because not only was it multiple instances of cheating, but one was like a decade-long relationship with an employee who he kept promising to marry.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don’t know this person or anyone else mentioned so I could be wrong but that an employee was involved sounds like reason for him getting black listed.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-25 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Was this his own employee?
