Idk about Yellowstone but most of the national parks filled the 2024 slots before the end of January. Volunteer slots open throughout the year though. Some of the spots are left open even when filled so they can backfill easily.

Even Gates of the Arctic? How many people even work for that one, or know about it?

They don’t have many working there, but I couldn’t say an exact number. I believe their employees are mostly (completely?) housed onsite and they also have a lot of contractors.
It’s hard to get a job with NPS and they don’t usually hire just any random applicants for a summer job. Usually the summer job type stuff is volunteer positions and even those usually go to people who have a background or future in the respective park’s areas of interest. Wildlife for many of them but some it’s more social sciences like at war memorials.
