kinda long...
Thanks! Yeah, I love this icon. ^_^
I think she should've at least tried a little harder to make them more relatable to the here and now.
I also think she kinda messed up some of the issues. The whole thing with the house-elves wanting to be enslaved... yeah... wow.
And the racism/tolerance thing. Ok, so in the last book, she has the whole thing with goblins--who made the Sword of Gryffindor--believing that an object belongs to whomever created it. If they give it to someone, as soon as that someone dies, the creator (or presumably his or her relatives) regains ownership of said object. Basically, the person to whom the object was given was just borrowing is from the creator. So, Harry's telling the goblins that, yeah, sure, we'll give the sword back to you guys when we're done with it, despite the fact that he has no intention of doing so. When asked about this, Jo just kinda dismisses goblin laws of ownership... ?! So... the laws and customs of other beings can just be shrugged away when they're inconvenient to us? How wonderfully tolerant and un-racist that is!
And don't even get me started on how she treats Slytherins...

(Anonymous) 2009-07-29 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)And if you accept the analogy that house elves=slaves then the whole Kreacher thing is nauseating.
Re: kinda long...
Jeez. >< I especially hated how Draco acted at the end of HP. All scared and cowardly during the final battle? Wut? Draco might not have had the courage of the "amazing" Harry Potter, but I think he wouldn't be a simpering coward. I mean, seriously, come on.
Re: kinda long...
I mean, even Salazar had the best intentions at first (until that whole 'exterminate all those with impure blood by wrath of my giant evil snake' thing, whoops) because when Hogwarts was founded witches and wizards were being persecuted by Muggles CONSTANTLY. It was logical, at the time, for Salazar to only want pure wizarding families included. Muggle-borns COULD have been untrustworthy to the extent that their families would force them to expose the SATAN-FILLED MAGIC USERS OMFG COVERED IN SIN school to the public. It was a safety precaution, and it wasn't the core of his teaching/student selection philosophy. Just a portion.
Draco being made out like a totally puss REALLY aggravated me, too. Like, sure he was slightly less EVIL than the Death Eaters, but that didn't make him totally boring and without personality or conviction or...this comment is getting too long. JK loses at Slytherins, which doesn't make sense but is true.
Re: kinda long...
Oh, and you know what else pissed me off? How, at the end of DH, JKR had ALL of the Slytherins leave. Okay, Pansy Parkinson is a little pug-faced bitch, we know this, and so it's no surprise that she left (and I did love how McGonagall was all, "Thank you, Miss Parkinson. Now kindly GTFO" lol), but I SEVERELY doubt that EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF SLYTHERIN HOUSE would leave. Like, seriously? Come on! Even if she wants to push the entire "they only care about themselves" thing (which I don't believe - some Slytherins ARE noble in their own cocky way - look at Snape and Slughorn), it could easily be seen as "they knew that it'd work out best for them to side with the "good guys," so to speak, so they remained behind." Seriously, it pissed me off how she painted all Slytherins as being cowardly lowlives who left to save their own skin. I realize that she was trying to make some epic battle of good and evil, but Slytherin is NOT evil - especially not the younger Slytherins, the first and second years and so on that are only eleven and twelve for Christ's sake. Way to completely show that people are completely black and white, JKR - that you're either good or you're evil, and if you come from that House, clearly you're evil because where a person is brought up COMPLETELY forms your character. Jeez.
Re: kinda long...
Of course, by the same token, I've read at least one epic fic where Salazar re-manifests as a ghost/memory/whatever and kinda laughs at all the pointless evil committed in his name and by the kids put in his house. Sort of like I imagine Jesus reacting, actually. Only...not as blasphemous. If that's what you're into.
Ughhh, fucking JKR, okay? That's like assuming EVERY SINGLE other student would stay and/or fight against the Death Eaters! I would bet there are a couple Gryffindors and Ravenclaws - probably not SO many Puffs, they've always come off a bit idealistic (moreso than Gryffindors, actually) but still - they've spent all year with these dark wizards teaching them, some of them are bound to be attracted to the power. Or scared so shitless they'd be tripping over their robes to get home and out of the line of fire. Come on.
Aiming high and not minding stepping on a few heads on your way there isn't inherently EVIL. It's...just a little under the public moral measure of appropriate.
You'd think after that silly woman went to all the trouble showing us how corrupt and insane the people who are supposed to help - read: Umbridge and Fudge - can end up, she could be a little more creative with the final battle. Shit, people, there's no way Dolores AND Corny were both Slytherins. I would almost certainly put them both in Hufflepuff...maybe Gryffindor!
*eyeroll* Ridiculous to a depressing degree.
Re: kinda long...
And oh man, I would LOVE to read that fic. xDDD I can just imagine him laughing at Voldemort or something. "You think having a snake nose is attractive, sonny boy? Here's a tip: we TALK to snakes, we don't try to LOOK like them."
And EXACTLY to your other point! I mean, not only were Dolores and Corny not Slytherins, but we have proof IN DEATHLY HALLOWS that PETER FUCKING PETTIGREW was in GRYFFINDOR. That cowardly, spineless, selfish, greedy little twit was in the supposed almighty house of the brave; quite obviously, if he'd been in Harry's year, he would have gotten up from that table and run for his life with his wormy little tail between his legs. So, quite obviously, not all Gryffindors have the sun shining out of their asses, and by the same token, not all Slytherins should be selfish little prats! At the very least, Draco should have stayed behind to help - she should have had him redeem his character, because it's not as if he was ever evil in the first place - the fact that he wouldn't/couldn't kill Dumbledore tells us that much, at the very least.
. . . Although, I seem to remember an interview where she got all upset at the idea of Draco/Hermione, saying, "He's the VILLAIN! She wouldn't be with the villain!" Granted, that was years ago, so I could be remembering wrong, but still. -___-; Draco may be an antagonist, but that's not the same as a villain, JKR. (Though personally, I prefer Draco/Ginny, myself. But that's just me~ They should mix their fire and ice and make me some pureblood baybeez. >D)
