Those selective colour layers in photoshop are just like taking actual art classes, and figure drawing has nothing on learning how to use channel mixer!

Half the time the icon ruins the original image's composition because the iconist has no real clue what rule of thirds and colour theory even are.

Which is why it's more fun when your friends are art majors or you're an artist yourself. Admittedly, I don't share most of my icons, because I just kinda make 'em for myself, and I think most of 'em are pretty shitty. But yeah, Rule of Thirds is a big one that bugs the shit out of me. I think that's why I can't centre images when I make icons.

Still, there are some amazing iconners out there who really do know what they're doing with colour and composition. They're quite a treat to find.

I've seen a lot of icon-makers whose stuff I generally like, but there is only one I've ever found whose work I would argue DESERVES to be credited every single time because the quality is just so fucking incredible (http://tragic-icons.livejournal.com/69710.html#cutid1).
