Oh, don't get me wrong, they had a really cool aesthetic design. I've just never understood how they spawned this whole offshoot of fandom when they were barely onscreen for 10 minutes and weren't really developed as characters.

I'd rather watch a movie about them than about Neo and Trinity and Morpheus any day.

But but... I like Neo and Trinity and Morpheus... :(

See, and I don't really get why anyone likes them. I don't even see them as being that developed. They're placeholders to allow a rather interesting story to happen, but they just don't have much character. They never really felt like real people to me.

It's a personal taste thing. If I'm gonna care about cardboard characters, it should at least be the ones who act a little bit interesting to me--these are dreadlocked, albino, twin assassins who are apparently viruses of some kind, and that's a bit fascinating.

And honestly, there are plenty of characters who spawn offshoots of fandom from only having a few moments of screen/page time. There's something really interesting about characters that you only get a glimpse of. Like an iceberg--you get this tiny bit of what they look and act like in a given situation, and it's fun to suss out what their background, character, reasoning, etc might be. Especially if they manage to shove even a tiny moment of characterization into those few minutes. (Toad from the X-men movie comes to mind. Maximum three lines, but little moments like teasing Sabertooth, wearing Scott's visor, and the dorky little dance create a gestalt of a character that fans love to piece together.)

And as for the "10 minute" thing, I mean, ten minutes is actually a very long time as far as storytelling in a 2-hour movie goes. Watch an average cartoon, they'd better manage to make you interested in a character within a minute or three at most. If you haven't made you character interesting within five minutes, you've failed. And like I said, in their ten minutes, the Twins, the KeyMaker, and especially Merovingian) managed to capture my interest more than Neo or Trinity or Morpheus did in three whole movies. Quality of time versus quantity.

It's a personal taste thing.

I agree, definitely :) I mean, I love Trinity and Neo in particular (they're my favorite characters in the films), and I think they're absolutely great and interesting characters, but I know that I'm pretty much in the minority on that. But I also like a lot of the program characters; Smith is my favorite of those, but the Merovingian is also very interesting. The Twins just never got me like those characters did.

And as for the "10 minute" thing, I mean, ten minutes is actually a very long time as far as storytelling in a 2-hour movie goes.

That's a very valid point, and I don't disagree with you. I mean, the Merovingian and the Architect managed to capture my interest in a relatively small amount of screentime. My favorite characters had my interest within their first scenes. But I guess I just didn't get that from the Twins, as I saw them as auxiliary side characters, backdrop, and nothing more. Again, it's all a matter of personal preference :)
