Is your family rich?

I have wanderlust but I'm also poor. So I'm just stuck at home miserable.

Everyone's middle class, oddly enough. Plus my dad's family is spread out and generally happy to let people stay over, which made travel relatively inexpensive in my childhood. In adulthood, my husband and I both have jobs that pay decently enough, and we tend to do a lot of free activities in the cities we visit (as we tend to prefer urban vacations; hooray for public transit!).

Relatable. People who equate "you can travel legally" with "you MUST be rich" tend to have been mislad by the tourism industry, which promotes a stereotype of what to do when you travel that gets people to overspend on everything.

dda and yeah, honestly. I'm far from rich but I've still been to five different countries. In two of those cases I stayed with friends who lived there and for two of the others I shared a hotel room with friends/relatives, which kept the costs down. If you go off-season then even flights aren't all that terrible, and there are plenty of perfectly nice hotels in non-touristy sections of cities that aren't horribly expensive either.

And that's the privilege of money speaking. I have found that most people really don't understand how well off they are. Always offering travel hacks and "its not really that expensive" advice.

Also many other privileges in play:
Location: intercity travel is muuuuch cheaper and easier in Europe & in the USA NE corridor
Connections: Having family/friends to stay with once you get there
Employment: having a job that lets you take time off with no loss of income/having a job that pays you above your living expenses OR BOTH
etc etc

My wife and I have good paying jobs that give us paid time off, but we live in a place where it's expensive AF to travel. I'm expected to fly home for my grandmother's 90th, and I've started re-arranging my budget so I can save up for it. Cruises and going abroad? LOLNO.

Nah, a lot of it really does have to do with when you choose to travel. If you go during the primary tourist seasons then it's going to be expensive, but if you're willing to go during less-traveled times the differences in airfare/hotel costs/etc. can be massive.

I've been to Las Vegas both during tourist season and during the off season and the trip during the off season cost way less than half what the trip in tourist season did.

I'm curious how you define well-off. I find that this notion is pretty context dependent.

(That said, according to Pew Research, for where my husband and I live, we are square in the middle income range. We fall short of upper income by at least 20 grand before taxes.)

I also have wonderlust but I am poor. And not really healthy. And have aviophobia that have got really really bad in last years.
So I take train or bus to closest towns. I make small trips on weekends. Some local museum? Here I go. Pretty church? Fuck yeah! Weird abandoned village? OK, I am taking my friends for that.
We have a really big museum 40 km/25 miles outside the city and I find it funny going regulary. Or I wonder around.
But of course I am lucky enough because I live in a major city.
I know a lot of people who take to hiking.
