Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 03:25 am (UTC)(link)that said, I also recognize how hard it is to kill Hamas when they use innocent Palestinian women and children as human meat shields and the Israeli government seems to just be mowing down everyone in their path.
let's not forget that the Israeli government knew what was going to happen on 10/6 and ignored it and that they've also been funding Hamas to ensure that a real Palestinian government would never be put in place, all to avoid a two-state solution which is what is desperately needed here. i hope Israelis will come out to vote against Netanyahu at the next opportunity that they get (assuming they will get one at all).
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 03:37 am (UTC)(link)But I've become convinced over the past several years that a lot of, and perhaps even most, people don't really mean it when they say they're against certain crimes and injustices. They are perfectly fine with them when they're given what they believe to be acceptable targets, and this explains why we can't, as a species, seem to get past this shit. There are too many people who don't actually want to, and they manage to hide themselves behind platitudes and aphorisms that make it look like they're in favor of peace and equality etc.
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2024-03-04 12:22 am (UTC)(link)Ask Jordan and Egypt why they won't open their borders to the Palis in Gaza. Ask them about their dealing with the Pali terrorists from the 1970s and onward. They're perfectly happy to scapegoat Israel and let them all be their headache while Jews get murdered.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 05:08 am (UTC)(link)I've also seen far too many excuses for Hamas among leftists. I don't see any of them (who aren't indigenous) giving their land back to whatever indigenous group was defeated by colonizers at some point, either. Israel has defeated Palestinians like five times since the middle of the last century. Like, fuckin'...what gave Hamas the bright idea to kidnap and murder families and kids in October? It's obvious to me that their funding is suspect (not all coming from inside the house) and there is no good faith peaceful deal objective on that side.
What's happening in Gaza right now to the Palestinian people is legitimately awful, of course. But I can't say any country would be completely above scorching some earth if they were raided by their neighbors who took hostages.
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)Yup, and this is why I can't take the decolonization argument seriously from US folks. These are people who themselves continue to live on settled/colonized land, land that was acquired through genocide and a kind of apartheid, with no plans to ever actually give it back. They have all sorts of excuses at the ready for why they can't. And when they talk about how "anything is justified if it's done to resist oppression and occupation," they don't include themselves as oppressors and occupiers, even though they count as both by their own definitions.
"Decolonization for thee, but not for me." It's easy to support a cause when the consequences of it are overseas, when it's strangers who are suffering and dying.
