idk if this has changed in the 20s but back in my day, every single anime movie was/is optional. a nice additional chunk of content to icon or fic about at best, rage-bait for online wars at worst, but 90% of the time not just non-canon but poorly wedged into canon. Forgettable. Optional.

DBZ movies? so hilariously bad. One Piece? so bad the entire fandom disavows knowledge of some of them even existing (and don't get me started on recaps of old arcs). I didn't even watch the Tiger&Bunny movie because it was focused on new characters instead of the old ones! Just. You don't have to watch them. They don't provide anything new to the canon that is the series.

I think it depends. The BSD movie introduces some shit that is important and if you don't watch it at the right time, can be very confusing.

Madoka Magica not only requires one of the movies, it’s looking suspiciously like it’s going to require the gacha game.

oh wow that's gross. almost as bad as Kingdom Hearts dropping lore in the middle of its terrible mobage.

well I guess from answers things have changed indeed, how sad. good luck OP.

Yeah, I'm sitting here going "what anime is OP watching?" because for most of the shows I've seen, the movies were either just recaps of the series in condensed form with maybe a few changes here or there OR totally original self-contained stories.

Like, the Gurren Lagann movies were fun, but they were just a condensed retelling of the series with some alterations. Escaflowne was an alternate universe story that had no connection to the TV series. The Fate/Stay Night Heaven's Feel movies were an adaptation of the Heaven's Feel route of the game, so you didn't need to watch them to be able to enjoy the Deen Fate anime or the Unlimited Blade Works anime since they were all separate routes. The AnoHana movie is cute but totally extraneous and it takes place after the series, so you aren't missing anything if you don't watch it.

I guess there are some shows where the movies are actually important to the larger plot of the series but IME that's not true in the majority of cases.

I feel like there's a definite more recent trend of movies being necessary. Off the top of my head we have, as mention above, the Madoka Magica movies, Demon Slayer Mugen Train (they did chop it up for TV later but still), Free (season 3 doesn't work half as well without seeing the prequel movies and there's no ending if you don't watch the newest movie) and Chainsaw Man's upcoming Reze arc film.

I thought the Madoka movies were just recaps of the series? I remember deciding to pass on watching them once I realized they weren't anything new.

The first two were, Rebellion is a direct sequel that ends on a (still unresolved, they finally announced a follow up) cliffhanger.

ngl, I loved the Inuyasha movies and still have them on DVD even though you can basically watch them for free on the internet.

I agree that most One Piece movies aren't that good and don't have to be watched. But movie 6 though...

I only acknowledge the Detective Conan movies I like and no one can stop me. :) (And even these have hilarious amount of property damage)
