Etsy's downfall is so sad

(Anonymous) 2024-03-13 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Used to be a great place to by niche or cool custom things. Now you have to check and see if every product is being drop shipped.

Or if someone is selling stolen art. I've been trying to find some cute BG3 merch and I am having a huge struggle with that. I've found a few things that are clearly made by the seller, but so many people are straight-up ripping art off of twitter or instagram and then slapping that on a shirt, stickers, or keychains and selling them. It's gross.

Yeah, I stopped buying on Etsy once they started allowing mass-produced garbage. It's too bad because I have a whole bunch of really cute jewelry that I got from artists there, but these days people farm everything out to be produced in China so finding artists who actually handmake their own stuff is more effort than it's worth. I just get my stuff from local craft shows now because at least I know all of that is handmade by the artist.

I haven't bought anything fandom-related online in years for that exact reason. The last time I got something from Etsy was 3 years ago and it was because my mom (who doesn't know its basically all stolen art) bought it for me for my birthday.

I do not understand why every fucking e-marketplace is apparently fine with their business being spammed with low-quality dropshipped crap.

Like how is this actually the business strategy that everyone decided to go with?

Etsy gets money for every listing, plus money for purchases. And lots of people don't know what dropshippers are, so they keep buying cheap tat and paying handmade artisanal prices. Monitoring their own site for scammers would take time and money, and in the end, Etsy has figured that it's not worth it. It's a crying shame, the site used to be such a neat place.

But it seems like such an obvious case of a short-run gain that screws you over big time in the long run.

Penny wise and pound foolish.

Oh, I totally agree. But like a lot of companies, short term gains are too attractive to resist, even if it devalues the whole point of the site in the first place.

I have no idea what drop shipped means. I have gotten some great Tolkien-themed art from Etsy, though.

It means the seller never actually buys the stock and is just an intermediary for the manufacturer. Consumer orders from an online store front run by the seller; seller takes that order to a manufacturer and the manufacturer mails it directly to the consumer.

And usually the dropshipped products themselves are overpriced and of poor quality.

How is anyone supposed to know if the seller is just buying from somewhere else?

I think some of the time people will just try to search for the same item on Alibaba and see if they can find it there.

DA A lot of the top listings are also on Amazon. Amazon does have a handmade market but those aren’t the items that are showing up on Etsy.

Because a lot of them are lazy and will just steal the original pics from whatever company they're selling it from, so sometimes a reverse image search will be helpful. Or do a general search for key words from the listing and see if it comes up on various sites like Temu or Aliexpress, stuff like that.

I still find stuff on there but I’m into vintage clothing. I have noticed you really have to sort through listings if I’m looking for anything new though.

Their search system used to be pretty decent! I'm into 18th century fashion, and I used to be able to search something like, "18th century shirt," and find what I want. Now you search that and it's just ... custom shirts for people who are turning 18, not the kind of shirts you'd wear from 1700-1799. ("Pirate" shirts and "poet" shirts also give similar results. I HATE it.)

DA
Enshittification 😩 not just Etsy, even my own workplace's job postings site is a stupid semi-useless place to try to navigate as compared to like 5 years ago.

Almost every place where I can use the search function seems to suck ass and is so infuriating to use.

It’s infuriating. They’re banning legit makers left and right, they’ve spent the last like two years auto refunding every false claim, and keep firing even more of their staff. It’s almost exclusively AI now despite the fact that their AI sucks so bad that they made headlines for it in summer 2022.

The only bright spot for some makers is that many of us have had a huge increase in event sales. The customers that would look and then go order from someone else on Etsy are now just buying in person. The irony is that before they were buying from legit makers most of the time, just the ones who undercut the market. And those people can go get fucked afaic.

I always need to check shipping costs bc anything I buy from Etsy is like. $60-70AUD in shipping if it's from America.

I first used Etsy when I was on the hunt for vintage Polaroid OneStep cameras, was so long ago. I enjoyed finding creative things on there. And now I just find crappy cheaply made stuff listed.
