Everyone always says Gareth Edwards is terrible, but...what has he even made besides Rogue One?

(Anonymous) 2024-03-14 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
He made a monster movie without monsters, a Godzilla movie without Godzilla, a Star Wars movie that had to be comprehensively reshot to add some Star Wars to it, and coming soon a Jurassic Park movie without dinosaurs in it. He has one tool in his toolbox, and that tool is a fundamental misunderstanding of what made Jaws work as a movie.

Rogue One was subjected to reshoots primarily because Disney decided they wanted it to be more of an ensemble film and thought Jyn wasn't stereotypically feminine nice enough, not because it didn't have Star Wars in it.

Plus to add Darth Vader, and the whole Scariff part. The movie was originally going to end on the rainy planet where Jinn's father died. And if you compare that as a finale to his other movie's finale's, you'll see that completely tracks. Everything Star Wars about the movie was added in reshoots.

The whole Scarif part was not added in after the fact; what in the world are you talking about? We have screenshots from the original cut of Jyn and Cassian running through the archives with the tape and dodging bullets on the beach. Cassian and K-2 originally died together on the beaches of Scarif.

Are you some kind of idiot?

"Everything Star Wars about the movie was added in reshoots"......Except the entire setting, aesthetic, premise? And that Scariff thing is complete bollocks. The original stuff they showed before the reshoots even showed them on Scariff.

Have you been listening to one of those shit-for-brains dudebro "video essayists" that just make multi-hour long rants bitching about the film and inventing shit to slag it off by because they hate the presence and prominence of women, or that it's not about fucking Luke Skywalker?

His Godzilla has more Godzilla in it than Jaws has shark. Part of what makes Jaws work is in fact how little you see the shark.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-15 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
No. You feel the presence of the shark throughout Jaws. Also, in Jaws it wasn't a Jaws movie, because the franchise hadn't existed yet. Plus there was a compelling story built around the the shark and the threat of the shark, with well writing and charismatic characters and actors. He one charismatic actor and character, and he killed them off in the prologue to avoid them distracting from his absence of a central theme.

Your mistake is exactly the same as his. Thinking just not showing Godzilla makes it a good Godzilla movie. You can't build tension in a Godzilla movie by not showing Godzilla, because, by now, we all know we are watching a Godzilla movie.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-15 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I have no strong feelings about Gareth Edwards' Godzilla movie but I disagree with your underlying logic here: even in a franchise monster movie, you can still build tension without actually showing your monster. The point of building the tension isn't just that we don't know who Godzilla is. You can rewatch Jaws and still enjoy it even if you've seen it before. The effect doesn't rely on never having seen the shark before.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-15 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
No, that isn't my mistake, because that isn't what I was saying. I was saying that Godzilla shows Godzilla. It shows him fairly frequently. I said that it shows him more than Jaws shows the shark to point out that your complaint makes no sense.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-15 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
He made The Creator, which is a sumptuously beautiful, incredibly well-designed, super fucking cool looking science fiction film that also has one of the lamest most useless plots I've ever seen in a movie.

God damn does it look great, though.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-17 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I just watched that and I'll be damned if I understand what the point of the movie was. Racism is bad? Well, yeah, but boy it took a long story to tell it.

Although I have to say the visual of all the dead los angeles bots being trash compacted was a horribly visceral visual after hearing that one cry out for the little girl. I mean holocaust horrible. So, I guess you could say Edwards is really good at gruesome imagery.
