Why would that happen? He has had voice lines since the game premiered.

This has me confused too. I have never played Overwatch in my life, but I know he always had voicelines from the beginning just from my friends' dashboards.

OP

That's what I'm saying!!! Why were people writing fis of Reaper like this?!

I'll say I didn't find his actual voice lines until later (as I didn't play the game until after reading fic -- which is what I'm assuming these authors probably did), so it was a bit jarring. But my ambivalence is what led to this secret, which outside of the corner of fandom I was part of, likely wasn't an issue.

Oh, that makes sense. I misunderstood your secret. Yeah, that would be annoying. Bad writing aside, it does rub the wrong way.

Is it necessarily racist to have a character use another language in that context? God knows ppl do it with like, French characters and I've never heard anyone say that's a problem. Is it just because there's other stuff going on that makes it racist?

OP

It's a number of other things. The anons above pointed out his voice lines had dropped since the game's premiere, which means one would know what the character sounds like, what his cadence is like, and so on.

So this was either a conscious decision to change the character's speech into one that implies a host of other parts of who he is and where he is from. The reason can vary -- perhaps they wanted to write someone familiar to them. The more critical side of me hesitates, because I know some people have certain fantasies and/or fetishregarding

sorry, posted before finishing. It could be the fantasy or fetish of a certain kind of man.
I think that perhaps the author saw the character, read a bit, didn't play the game, and made assumptions based on his appearance and backstory about the way he should sound. Which why did it have to be specifically like that?

I hope I made sense!

That does make sense, thanks! Sounds like they're getting into more stereotypes than JUST using a bit of a language that the character speaks, plus I do realize the context is a bit different, and Latino people are more racialized in the US(/Anglosphere in general?) than French people. Feel like I might still be inclined to assume it's people trying to write someone who speaks like them, but I have assumed too much good faith before so idk!
