Do you think a reader could enjoy it going in blind- meaning not familiar with the fandom?

i'd say you want to at least understand a little about the canon and the dynamic between the characters. skimming a wiki page about the film plots might help as well as info on the two main characters in the fic. also the concept of Drifting is something that's important to the story. basically it's where two people meld their minds together by some sci-fi means and can see into each other's thoughts and memories, often forming a special bond after the experience.

the other important thing to understand is that the characters have kind of a complex relationship with each other. they bicker a lot and don't see eye to eye on some things but they also care about each other. they Drift together in canon (with a giant alien monster's brain that allows them to get a peek at its motives) but they also develop a deep bond after Drifting with each other. the last important thing to note is that one of the characters (Newt) later gets possessed by the aliens in the sequel film. the sequel is pretty bad and the alien possession thing never gets resolved so this fic falls squarely into the fix-it category for me.

OMG, thank you! I recently watched that movie for the first time and came away wanting a whole spin-off series focusing on those two, and Hannibal Chau. Bookmarking this fic for later!

Enjoy! I love the Newmann ship and imo this fic is perfect. It's like a soothing balm after what happened in Uprising.
