You know...I think I had the opposite experience in a way. I grew up watching Xena and always wondered (until later seasons) but why was Gabrielle hanging around? Getting captured, being the sidekick, but essentially the non powerful regular person next to the battle-ax seeking redemption that was Xena. I started rewatching a few years ago (first season) and I began to realize just how clever and witty and what a way with words Gabrielle had. And her optimism at times. Which yeah, side kick, but also, it made me think hey, what's stopping you from having your own adventure? Are we all Xena? No. But we can have elements of Gabrielle, or even Joxer. And Gabrielle was not perfect. So not exactly the same example, but she was a good counter balance to Xena, a Wilson to her House, if you will.

I also appreciated Gabrielle now as an adult because she was not feeling her circumstances and did something out of her comfort zone to change them. Which is a lesson I come back to frequently.
