This is so true of stuff translated from Chinese. It's not unreasonable that the author didn't explain it in the context, because they weren't writing it for a western audience. The Chinese audience doesn't need the explanation! But as someone outside of that culture, I appreciate a good footnote that says, oh, this line is a classic literature/idiom/historical reference meaning this, or FYI, this form of address is significant because it says something very specific about the nature of the relationship between the two speakers, etc. If I didn't have that knowledge, there'd be whole layers of meaning that I'm missing out on.
