I personally don't mind footnotes. In my experience, it can be fun to have extra stuff on the side to help me as the reader learn more. If I don't want to read the footnotes then I won't. If I miss out on the context, oh well.
If I'm not feeling the footnotes in a certain piece of work, I don't engage/finish, but I don't begrudge writers for this.
