These are just different things that people might want out of a translation. There's no objective "better" or "worse" translation choice here

I am personally biased toward the "no footnotes to not break immersion", but as I wanted to explain (but did poorly, you wrote everything I wanted to say way batter than me thanks) it's not necessarily the best option in all cases.
It depends on the target audience and how you want your translation to work.
