I feel your pain, OP, that's a lot of why I left the fandom myself. I still love the movie, and the comic even more so, but I just can't bring myself to be involved in the fandom anymore. The new fans are just way too batshit.

I wish there was someplace to appreciate the movie and comic in a mellow, casual manner, without having to deal with obnoxious screaming fangirls or pretentious elitists.

Maybe one person's pretentious elitism is another person's reasoned disagreement.

It sounds like you just don't like fandom, which essentially IS varying degrees of obsession. Which is fine, but I don't see the point in holding it against people who actually enjoy it.

Better to obsess over JEH, a guy who can actually act and is extremely nice and open with the fans, than like 99.99999% of Hollywood dingbats out there. There are crazies in all fandoms. I actually really like the JEH fandom for keeping it relatively PG-13 most of the time!
