There are entire LJ communities devoted to trolls that went out of their way to make people think they were dying/died just to read the comments and garner sympathy. ENTIRE COMMUNITIES.

Okay, you know, I agree that the secret in question is quite probably true, and that callous comments are unnecessary, BUT, that line is patently untrue. Lots and lots of people have faked serious illness or death via in the internet. Check out the comm fake_lj_deaths or the wiki article on "Munchausen by internet." I'm not saying this is the case here, but trolls and mentally ill people have in the past lied about this sort of things, and will to do so in the future.

Eh, it doesn't even matter if OP is a troll. Fact is, there are people in fandom with terminal illnesses and some don't know how to bring it up (maybe because they're afraid of being seen as a drama whore, hmm?). When I talked about my mother's cancer leading up to her death, this is the reason I put it behind an f-lock.

You're not losing anything by believing them and giving them some long-distance hugs, even if they're a troll. You are, however, making a dying person feel even shittier than they already are, if they're serious, and you call them a liar.
