Blogs of people living in Japan are pretty good. You can just google those for the most part.

I agree that it is REALLY hard to find honest commentary on Japan. They'll say "Japanese people are so polite" when the truth is, "Japanese society generally encourages people to not express their feelings and to shut up and get on with it."

If there's a University nearby, you could try sitting in on Japanese culture lectures. I did a paper on it last year and it was a pretty honest view, warts and all sort of thing.

By "polite" they probably really mean to say "passive-aggressive." It's the same for the South. We have a reputation for being friendly and polite to strangers, but it's really just an act.

I think I love you forever for mentioning the Convenience Store song. I just discovered it the other day and laughed my ass off. It makes me feel nostalgic for the year I spent over there.
