The reason I dislike Ginny is the way she was portrayed in HBP: she was constantly making fun of people (like Fleur and Ron) or insulting them, cursing other students just for asking a question, flying into them with a broom ... In short, she was just mean and someone I would dislike greatly in real life (although I'm sure that's not how JKR intended her to come across).

As for Lily, we don't know that much about her, but from what little we've seen, I liked her. So, I'm definitely one of the people who like one of them and dislike the other, because I really don't see many similarities between them.

THIS. She came across as a mean character that in RL, I wouldn't like to be around. Thing is, no one in canon really calls her out for being a bitch to people.

Lily...I never cared for Lily. She was just a plot device to me.

It wouldn't make sense to call out Ginny for being a petty brat when other characters have permanently disfigured people (Hermione) and nearly killed people (Harry, Draco, Sirius, and James). And it's clear Hermione and Molly disliked Fleur as much as Ginny so they weren't going to call her out for it and Ron and Harry aren't exactly paragons when it comes to not talking shit about people.

Ginny's no better and no worse than most of the characters, including the heroic ones.

Er, the last two times were Smith and while she shouldn't be violent, Smith was repeatedly asking her about the time she and several friends were nearly killed and someone she knew and who had given her family shelter the year before *was* killed.

In short: Smith was being a tool.

Also, flying into with a broom wasn't going to hurt him. He's a wizard. If baby Neville could be dropped out of window, I'm sure an almost-adult wizard would walk away from a fall like that with just a few scratches. People get so focused on bashing Ginny they forget canon.

Agreed.

Yes, Smith was being a jackass, but in the beginning of the book, Ginny hexed him for simply asking too many questions. So she's a jackass, too. That'd be the Muggle equivalent of punching someone (or otherwise committing physical assault) for merely annoying you.

Lily has never done anything like that. I don't have that much love for Lily (I like her, sure) but I don't hate her. Ginny, I hate.

Um, yeah, I actually do dislike Fred and George as well. ("Hate" is a bit too strong a word, since I never said I hated Ginny either, just greatly disliked her.) They're bullies, pure and simple.

If by constantly making fun of people you mean disliking Flaur for being a classist stuck-up whiner, and then making peace with her when it turns out that despite all this, she actually loves Bill very much, then sure. If by insulting people you mean lashing back at Ron when he basically calls her a whore for kissing her boyfriend, then alrighty. If by cursing students for asking questions you mean throwing a mild and hilarious hex at Zacharias Smith for pressuring her for gossip on the night Sirius freaking DIED, well okay.

But sure, she's mean. She's the only one who sticks up for Luna while Hermione (who permanently disfigured a young woman by way of revenge) and other students ignore, huff, or laugh at her for being different. She's clearly not ashamed to be friends with both Neville and Lune when Harry himself is wincing like a bitch about being seen in such uncool company. Yes, she rammed someone with a broom, but if Ginny were a boy, no one would call her mean for doing something like that after all the crap ZS had been spewing. In fact, I don't see anyone bashing Draco for stomping on Harry's face, nor do I see anyone whining at the twins and Harry for going after the slytherin team when they were talking trash about the Weasley family. I mean, for fuck's sake, people are pretty much over Umbridge by now, but they're still harping about Ginny. It's cringeworthy.
