I'm guessing it has something to do with his treatment of Snape, wouldn't you say? (Unless the haters aren't Snape fans ...)

I dunno, I never really liked Snape (although I didn't think he was evil, none of this "poor woobie snape is misunderstood!!!" stuff...no, the man was a jerk-off), but I still hated James' treatment of him. You can hate someone based on his treatment of another person, even if you don't like the other person. Similarly, I hate Ginny because of how she hexed Zacharias Smith in HBP (for simply asking too many questions and annoying her), even though I fully think that Smith is a tool.
