I did an Asia studies minor in my undergrad, including Japanese history, and there's a lot of good, bad and ugly in both modern Japan and its background. That said, when I finally had a chance to visit, I found the real Japan far more satisfying than any romantic portrayal I'd seen. Yes, regular urban problems and I kept an eye out for my ass every time I got in a busy bus/subway (lots of guides warn women traveling alone) but that actually became part of the appeal.

In difference to this secret though, all things considered I did find something very spiritual in the country both times I was traveling. Might have been different because I was a guest as oppose to living there (and thus, more incline to visit shrines, parks, et etc.), or maybe just my life at that point, but lots of awe. I'd return in a heartbeat. ;)

This pretty much describes my experience with Ireland, actually. And apparently many Irish people find their country spiritual and uplifting as well.
