What... what fandoms are you in, OP? I've never seen this.

I would back out immediately, too.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-26 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw this for the first time the other day and was so confused! It was on ao3 too, which makes no sense at all. It was censored in the summary so I never got as far as clicking to see if it was also censored in the fic itself. Because yeah, fuck that shit.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-26 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, same, but the other day I found something even worse! The characters would say "swiving" instead of "fucking" and "excrement" instead of "shit". And no, there is no The Good Place-style canonical reason for this to happen! They just talk like normal people in canon!

(Anonymous) 2024-03-26 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Noooooooo :(

(Anonymous) 2024-03-27 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I muted the author immediately! I couldn't deal!

Agreed. It is dumb even in Canon source material too. Either swear or don't. If the censor won't let you, get creative in your workarounds.

this shouldn't be a secret bc it's pure facts. the fact that you've had to witness this with your own eyes is a crime, anon. XD

Fair, nonny. Fair.

Also, "hecking" needs to die.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-27 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
'hecking' wouldn't bother me if it's something the character would SAY. If the character strikes me as a tumblr user of a certain age, I wouldn't blink at it.

Sure, but in fandom that’s usually not the case unless the author’s doing some sort of modern high school AU. Or maybe if it’s a Nickelodeon/Disney show fandom aimed at tweens.

Either way, not fandom content that I’m intentionally interacting with.

I fucking love swearing, but also, why censor when you can write around it? If I'm trying to keep a fic rating down, I'll do, like, "Joe cursed" or "Andy swore under her breath." You can just imply that they're swearing if you think it would be in-character but you personally don't want to write the swears.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-27 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
So many places self censor. I understand if a creator is trying to avoid getting their stuff blocked/demoneytized, but often I feel those who don't need to censor...do.

And it irritates me. Either use the words or find a new word to replace it. If you can't write or say "fuck", then don't fucking use it. Find a new word and don't fucking censor! Just fucking use your goddamn words! If you don't need to censor THEN FUCKING DON'T!

It plays heavily into purity culture and FUCK THAT SHIT! Own your swear/taboo words or DON'T FUCKING USE IT IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU NEED TO CENSOR.

Oddly, I just ran into a fic that censored swear words a few days ago. I don't think I remember seeing that before. It was otherwise pretty good so I read it anyway, but the use of the asterisks puzzles me. It was on ao3, which definitely doesn't require that kind of censorship, but maybe the author thought it was needed? It was weird.

The only acceptable use of this is riffing on Terry Pratchett in Mort.

“Well,----me,” he said. “A----ing wizard. I hate----ing wizards!” “You shouldn’t----them, then,” muttered one of his henchmen, effortlessly pronouncing a row of dashes.”

I think it's funny to censor the tamest minced oaths (e.g. "h*ck" or "d*rn"), especially when juxtaposed with uncensored usage of much harsher profanity.

but yeah no when they censor just because "oh no the naughty words" that's fuckin annoying and they need to get the tiktok out of their brain
