This is demonstrably false: I'm in multiple fandoms where there are more f/f fic than m/f or m/m with men in the media; it's just that either the female characters get more screen time or are better developed or more interesting in all of these cases (The Expanse, Yellowjackets, Scavengers Reign).
Which if anything suggests that the "m/m is more popular because male characters get more development and screentime" theory of yaoi is fundamentally correct.
