apology vids are not for the audience. apology vids are for a) hits/monetization before any mass exit and b) sponsors and other entertainment partners. the last thing is the calculation for any one with public presence, not just youtubers. and what usually happens is that the youtuber tries to excuse themselves with their apology, avoid the more egregious charges, and/or lie about their actions (my favorite is "i apologized privately" when they did no such thing lmao). for obvious reasons, that's not going to calm down anyone. if the youtuber is big enough, other creators will use the drama and apology for their own monetization purposes, which certainly doesn't calm anyone down either.

that said, i have seen apologies work before, but they admit without qualification and they mention reparative action, and they're not egregious enough in the culture or space for true mob rage eta: or they're "too big to fail" so to speak.

How do you know they didn't apologize privately? Are you personally monitoring all of their interactions?

Also, apology vids are often for the people screeching that a public apology is needed -- people who, in actuality, will not accept any public apology.

That "good think" says that unless you personally know each person involved in every instance of someone giving a public apology, you cannot and do not know.

Which people are you including in this "who does and does not?" Why are your observations more accurate that those of other people? Oh, I know, I know -- you have a very, very high opinion of yourself, for reasons I've never been able to discern, since you're basically an eternal college student who thinks declining to capitalize makes her deep. But why don't you actually make a real argument, instead of just resorting to, "my head is very far up my ass and in the depths of my colon, I've seen God, and discerned the Absolute Truth?"

Even if that's true, a person's single experience in one instance can't be generalized to all other instances. The fact that she may have received a disingenuous apology doesn't mean that all apologies, to all people, are disingenuous.

I have to agree with the above anon. How can anyone possibly know if people apologized privately, or if they were sincere in giving said apology? There's no way you can know what's in someone else's heart, one way or another. Especially if you don't know them personally.

Of course, no one is obligated to believe anyone about anything. But your certainty about what is and isn't real is disturbing. And a big part of why I hate, not you, but online discourse as a whole when it comes to this sort of thing. Everybody acts like they're right and have zero doubts, and rarely if ever admit when they're wrong. Or sorry when they go too far with their sticks and rope.

(Sorry if I'm coming off a bit intense about this topic. I'm feeling some kind of way about it because I recently watched Contrapoints video about canceling.)

....when did EYE mention someone's heart OR sincerity OR whether something is "real". this is a hilarious response to what you think is someone exhibiting the type of discussion you hate, but i would love to know how you got to me saying "i know who is sincere in their apology making" because right now it seems like you are engaging in exactly the type of discussion you hate.

what's disturbing is that it seems like you made assumptions about what i must have meant and instead of being like "did you mean this?" abstracted from what i said, got self-admittedly intense in response to a video you watched and apparently cannot examine your own behavior through it. genuinely funny response to that video to lecture someone else about your thoughts on their behavior.

yes every time i know someone's lying it's because proof of that lie has been shown or i have personal knowledge of it. lbr here, you made the assumption that when i said my favorite lie is the private apology lie, i was saying that a private apology is always a lie. but i didn't say that and your loud and wrong lecture got exactly the response it deserved.
