Re: What fanon changes that everyone seems to accept do you absolutely hate?

He really doesn't. It's explicit in the text that what he does is Guidao, not Modao, and that it wasn't harmful to the practitioner.

That's the whole point of the story. That just because society says one thing, that doesn't make it true. That you should investigate the actual facts of the matter.

That's. That's literally the point of the story.

Except what's literally the point of the story is also that it doesn't mean shit if you actually do or do not do something bad, as long as a good number of people believe that what you're doing is bad, your life will potentially suck. Because the prejudices of others and the hypocrisy therein is bad. And again, semantics. To the regular/"righteous" cultivators, what he did was very much in the realm of modao. And yeah, it's been a few years since I read it but didn't he basically die from a cultivation backlash? Granted this can happen with any cultivation method but it did, in fact, harm him. Just not necessarily because of the cultivation techniques itself.

Le sigh.

Except what's literally the point of the story is also that it doesn't mean shit if you actually do or do not do something bad, as long as a good number of people believe that what you're doing is bad, your life will potentially suck.

That's not semantics, that's literally the opposite point of the story. That's victim blaming. Just because the "righteous" cultivators thought it was modao doesn't mean it was.

Yes, he died from the backlash of destroying the Yin Hufu, and anyone would have died from that. It's not a product of specifically his cultivation.

Which is why I hate the fannon that what WWX does is modao (it's not) and that just the practice of it is harmful (it's not). I keep seeing fanfics where he's harming himself by practicing demonic cultivation and THAT'S NOT THE STORY. But it's become so prevalent in the fandom because people have no media literacy and can't think critically. They just accept what the majority think in a novel that's about how the majority didn't bother to look at the reality or think critically and were therefore wrong.

You're doing it right now.

No I'm not. We're just mixing up Doylist and Watsonian here. In-universe, to the characters, he was outwardly practicing anon-righteous way of cultivation which in most cultivation settings defaults to modao. I think a lot of the fanon interpretations do hinge on that misconception you mentioned and I do agree it's a stupid fanon more often than not.

Yes, you are. In universe, in FACT, he was actually practicing guidao. He factually, in universe, NOT practicing modao. Just because the other characters thought he was practicing modao doesn't mean he WAS.

Modao isn't a default, catch-all for non-traditional cultivation. It is a specific cultivation path.
