I read a great Giles/Xander fic back in the day. And I say that as someone who absolutely does not like student/mentor dynamic.

if there's anything I've learned from watching my partner start 10 different games (only finished one so far) it's that the romance options are the same for everyone and they all sound generic and unrealistic no matter who you're romancing with who. Honestly Astarion being sappy with anyone just sounds wrong compared to his regular day to day personality, to say nothing of most of the others. It's not that you can't see them romancing each other, it's that the romance has no alternative flavor based on the pair's individual personalities.

I mean, I love villain/Hero ships. And Villain/Villain ships too, though those tend to be a bit less controversial. There are too many to list, these are two of my three favorite ship types (the third being friendship ships).

I love it so much.

Tons of in-series content to mine. But alas, I once made a secret here about how I only wrote for kids media in large part because I don't think I'm smart enough or have the talent to get adult character voices right.

I hear that! As much as I enjoy their canon platonic dynamic, the fact that I do ship them hard makes me feel like I can't give them as an answer...

Inspired by Harry Potter fandom and the fic Manacled and the massive influx of fan binds, etc.

I couldn't even bring myself to read Manacled because I try to disengage with any and all HP content, even fan-created because JK is such a terror.

As a former fan and an MM fan, I also might be bitter about how much of booktok seems to be devouring Dramione because my personal pet ship for the fandom I now avoid at all costs is Ron/Draco.

Anyway. I'm just here to start discussion & observe.

Some people in this place have a really weird chip on their shoulder about Sheith shippers. This isn't the first time you've tried to spin it as them being well not quite as bad but ALMOST as bad as Klance shippers. And I gotta say, as someone who was there and in the thick of things: You are wrong. It was Klance shippers. Was every Sheith shipper a good person? Haha no. But it was still so far skewed towards Klance shippers doing actual damage that you cannot both sides this.

And are Klance shippers solely responsible for today's fandom climate? Also no. But it's not unreasonable to bring them up when talking about exactly how we got to where we are today. As early as a few months before Voltron debuted, the juggernaut ship in one of my main fandoms was a middle-aged man and a teenage boy, and it was treated like business as usual by absolutely everyone whether they shipped it or not.

Honestly the whole thing is a garbage fire but I keep wishing it had been any other fandom just so I wouldn't have to hear about anything potter-related now that she's gone full holocaust denier-level mask off.

Then again, at this point I fully expect people who can't let go of hp to be... flimsy at best when it comes to having a moral standpoint, so.

I'm the forget I've already eaten and overeats like whoa neurodivergent, which is why its good I don't have chips in the house. My eating is mostly sensory related and I have problems tuning into my body cues like hunger.

Plain old store brand potato chips with the ridges would do! It's the crunch and the salt I crave.

I have not eaten meat for 20+ years and I don't even really like burgers and yet sometimes I crave one. Weirdest thing.

Yeah the wank in the Voltron fandom was absolutely nuts, but it wasn't the cause of the current fandom climate by any means, and it wasn't started by one single group of shippers. Like Klance shippers just didn't have the power to do that? And for all that they had toxic fans they also had chill ones who just liked their ship and didn't get into the fandom bullshit.

I'm never keen on groups tarring the 'other' group with the same brush as if every subgroup is a monolith, it's reductive and stupid. But then ship-wars are reductive and stupid, so I guess it fits the mentality. Sadly the reality is that sometimes people just aren't nice and no group is immune from having assholes.

I wouldn't say I have a controversial pairing 'type'-- whether it's a ship between enemies or between two villains or what, I have to find the individual example compelling, and there's a lot that I just don't care about.

I have always shipped Doc/Marty from Back to the Future, which has an... extremely variable age gap? Or no age gap if you go with the video game timeline? But the thing is it doesn't fit into a controversial 'type' because it's NOT a mentor/mentee relationship, it's just best friends where... one of them happens to be an old guy.

(as an adult, my feelings are... different, than when I was a kid. Like, I don't see Doc going for it while Marty is underage, which was not a consideration I even took into account when I was young, just because as an adult if I connected on a mental/emotional level with someone young and they came onto me, I would pump those brakes hard. BUT taking the video game into consideration then you have a whole time traveler's wife thing, which I think is compelling!)

I've shipped Chihiro/Haku from Spirited Away since I was a child... which is not controversial generally, but lately I've gotten into the idea of future scenarios of adult Chihiro/dragon Haku. But I don't think saying "What if Chihiro grows up to be a dragonfucker" would go over well in fandom. (There are a couple fics though, god bless).
