My Dad does. I remember how much he had ranted about the historical inaccuracies after we had watched Sweeney Todd (mostly about how tower bridge shouldn't have even been there since it wouldn't have been built yet).

In my experience working in the heritage sector in Scotland...plenty of Scots hate that film too.

(Having my charitable historian hat on I think people are missing the context that it is largely based on a text that was written around a century and a half after Wallace was executed, and that was probably mostly fanciful in what it recounted. But ultimately the film is an adaption of an epic tale where both have only a passing resemblance to actual record because the actual record is very limited. The only thing that truly pisses me off from the historical POV is leaving out Andrew Murray - his role in the lead up to and actually at Stirling Bridge was important. And yes, leaving out the bridge at a battle famed for having a bridge was silly. Oh and the nonsense stuff with Isabella of France because she was a child in reality.)

There are so many horrible "historical" and emotionally disappointing video adaptations of things that are way better attested, like Henry VIII, Catherine the Great, and Marie Antoinette. So I don't think they get a pass because of the lack of historical record. The ones who are only huffy about this film noticed that they are not the heroes of the story and makes them Feel Bad.

Yeah, it's definitely not a uniquely English thing. In my experience, Scots are more likely the be annoyed by it, and English people upset by historical inaccuracies in Braveheart are just as likely to be upset by other historical inaccuracies in film.

It seems like the sort of thing where the imperialism is too close to home. Scotland had an independence referendum that was close enough that if they'd had it after Brexit, it might have succeeded.

I feel like the answer is probably racism. When it comes to English people getting angry, it is usually racism somewhere in the mix.

Finally, someone on FS who views the Celts and Gaels as a separate race!
