Honest question, do people only romance according to their irl sexuality? It's like those people who only make characters who look just like them. Just wildly different to how I play games.

More on topic, I definitely feel this on some level with certain characters. I'm ace but when bearded Steve Rogers walked on screen I had to take a minute and re-evaluate.

I do not! I'm a lesbian but I'm romancing Gale (a dude) in BG3. :D

I romance every interesting or attractive NPC I can. I play a lot of modded Skyrim so my character always ends up with a poly adventuring party and if I have sex mods I set everyone as bi. I make up a whole lot of extra story in my head and rotate who goes on adventures and who gets stuck at home babysitting, stuff like that. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had in a game! My current party has two vanilla NPCs (Lydia and Raya) and the rest are all mods (3 guys and 1 girl).

I do when you're only allowed to romance one character at the time, assuming I like any women that are romanceable by my character.

If you can go poly (or slutty >_>), then I'll go ahead and collect the guys, too.

The one exception is Mass Effect 2, where even if they'd gone ahead and given some f/f options, I'd still have probably gone for Thane. ... Well, unless Jack was available. Then I'd be torn.

Yeah usually. I start by romancing the one I like the most, usually a tragic male character who needs my protection. If I replay the game I might explore different romance options. But I also might stick with my beloved blorbo.

I romance according to in-game benefits, if any; then according to the character I'm roleplaying

do people only romance according to their irl sexuality?

Sort of, but not in the way most people mean by that. I'm a cis lesbian, and I exclusively romance NPCs who are the same gender as my player character, but I play as both male and female characters (about a 50-50 split). Which means I'll often do multiple playthroughs of a game so that I can romance female NPCs when I'm playing as a woman, and male NPCs when I'm playing as a man. Otoh, if a game only allows for straight romances, then I won't romance anyone in it.
