I'm a little confused - are you saying the term lover can only be used if sex is explicitly shown?

I mean generally speaking I hate the term lover, so that would stick out and annoy me too. I was just thrown by your rasoning a bit.

Oh no, not exactly. I mean it's often used between two people who barely have a romantic relationship (yet), never mind a sexual one. "Love interest" would be more accurate, but it's kind of clumsy to use in dialogue.
