How would you say it’s used in that context?

"Lovers" implied a slightly more serious relationship than "sweetheart," and "making love" usually referred to courting/romancing.

Although that part in Emily Climbs where her widowed Aunt accuses Perry of making love to her when she finds them talking one night without supervision is infinitely funnier if Aunt Ruth thinks you fuck by kissing someone on the ear.
