is cash "real" to you?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-12 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Meaning, do you account for any cash you have into your financial decisions?

I don't. If it isn't in my bank account or one of my cards, it doesn't count as real money to me. I'll spend it on things without worrying over it like I would with making a purchase a card. It helps that I rarely carry more than $100 on me.

I don't carry cash.

I haven't carried more than a few pounds in cash since the pandemic. I never had much cash on me prior to that point as it was, but now I have like maybe £2 in my wallet? I got so used to using my card for everything during 2020 and I've stuck to it since.

I was the opposite. There were all these weird concerns about banks and society crashing with this general air of "keep a safety net of cash at home." It was a weird time when I had a bunch of cash in an envelope at home but also paid 99% of stuff via card online.

It could have been regional? I live in London and the city basically took the pandemic as an opportunity to pretty much get rid of cash, which I don't hate as I get very flustered with counting out money, but given that I could only pay for anything with my card I've ended up being even more cashless than I was already.

The only reason I even have that £2 is because my uncle gave me £20 for my birthday in cash so I've just been spending it on small treats here and there.

I worked at a bank during the start of the pandemic and right at the beginning of the lockdowns there was absolutely a feeling of needing cash. We were told not to worry about the usual cash limits and allowed to order a bunch of cash because we had a lot of customers the first month of lockdown wanting thousands of dollars in cash 'just in case.'

So-so. Mostly the only cash I get is my bonuses. I'll hoard it away to use on special treats or non-essentials I'm saving up for. So no it isn't "real" as in it doesn't count towards my overall savings/bank balance, but it is a separate balance in my mind I do track. But I spend it on fun things so it kind of falls into that "doesn't count" category.

No, but I also don't carry any cash so that's probably why. If I have cash on me it'd have to be cash someone gave to me as a birthday gift or something and therefore not really factored into any routine finances

We never factor it into our household finances. My partner uses cash frequently and I never use it. I have a little table by our door that I keep $40 in a mix of bills in the drawer in case I need to tip for something. But once that cash is withdrawn from the ATM, it’s considered spent.

Opposite. Bank card or c.card seems much less 'real' and doesn't mean as much to spend. When I have cash, I want to just hoard it. Stick it in a jar and hide it. NEVER break the big bills, because then they get spent.

I should, but I don’t. I don’t carry that much cash either.

I haven't carried cash in years. It's too easy to just spend it frivolously, whereas with anything I put on one of my cards, I have to see it on my account statement and so that really curbs my impulsive spending hard.

I don't carry cash for regular use. If I pull some out for whatever reason it's "gone" from the places I look to see my money (bank account, cc, ect) so it doesn't really exist. Or rather it's already gone. But also I hate spending cash (COINS SUCK!) so it's pretty much just for children selling lemonade or cookies.

Yeah same. I have a bit of cash in my wallet and it's already spent in my mind

I mean... it's real to me, but like... if I take out a set amount of cash that isn't for a specific purpose, then I can spend it on whatever without worrying about it, because the cash that's already out does not affect the bank balance. It's not something I do very often. If I'm going to a con then I'll take out cash for the vendor's hall and I won't worry about that because in taking it out I have accounted for it, but I will keep an eye on card purchases, because I need my bank balance to remain at a certain place.
