I live in DC. It's expensive, but the average salary here is $70,000+ per year so the housing actually isn't that bad when you consider it in light of what people are earning.

sa, as an example, my very first job straight out of college with zero real work experience that wasn't me working at a coffee place in college paid me $60k to start.

I can't speak to DC specifically but the pattern I mentioned is the same if you look at housing costs as a percentage of income. It's not just that housing costs are higher in big coastal cities on an absolute basis. The data indicates that housing costs are also higher there relatively, as a percentage of income.
