I'm not entirely sure we've gotten more permissive about sex, at least at scale.

Over what timeframe?

AYRT

I'd start looking at the last 20 years. Strangely, at the turn of the millennium there was a bit more openness regarding sex in the mainstream. I feel like there has been some regression in this century.

Hmmm.

I think there has been a degree of repression compared to what it ass like 20 years ago.

At the same time, I think a lot of that is due to frankly, there were some things that were too open 20 years ago. Some wrong, abusive stuff that was not objected to strongly enough.

I guess it makes sense to define "we." I mean more like...in fandom and more left-leaning spaces, it's often that anything goes with regards to sex, but speech is very tightly controlled.

And I'm not necessarily saying that all new norms around speech are bad; when it comes to how we speak to one another, it's good to aim for respect. It's just an odd correlation.

Not really sure what you mean still. I think this really differs from fandom to fandom.
