I think of it as an odd subtype of hurt/comfort. It's not my cup of tea, but I think a lot of people do it for reasons other than character accuracy, such as kinking on the vulnerability or for emotional catharsis. Idk, a lot of fic is about what we didn't get from canon, so I can see why people go there. I do definitely like fic where repressed and tough characters get to show a more vulnerable side, though I prefer it to feel IC and not be a big focus of the fic, so I kinda get it?

Yeah. To me, it seems more about scratching the author's itch rather than caring about being in character or anything like that. But then, most fanfic seems that way to me.
