Like... I love when fics let characters have well-deserved breakdowns (or receive much-needed care) after all the shit that they've had thrown at them and had to battle through! I HATE when fics portray them as only being weak little woobie baby when they've BEEN dealing with high stakes stuff in canon.

Really egregious in one of my fandoms-- character A has been in a VARIETY of Situations, many of them life or death, some of the non-life or death ones still very high risk, has been weathering injuries alone over and over again, and has a decent list of skills beyond just 'not dying'. He's very competent in multiple ways, frequently the *most* competent character in whatever group he's in...

Obviously I'd LOVE to see him hit his breaking point and I'd love to see him being forced to accept someone else caring for him. I'd love to see A/B hit that point together and lean on each other! I'd even love to see A take on a more submissive role IN CONTRAST TO HOW HE NORMALLY ACTS.

But like, good luck if I want to find fics where A is a total badass grappling with the fact that he's *also* human and he's been ignoring all of his needs for too long, instead of a fic where A is just a poor widdle babygirl princess and B is uncharacteristically tough and strong and badass and able to protect him from all his problems, instead of being kind of soft and very stressed and struggling to rise to the occasion despite having NO badass qualifications. It's SO weird and I see it over and over again. It's not really a reverse of their personalities because it's so far exaggerated even then, but like... I dunno. I hate it.

+1, a lot of fic has a premise I'm kind of into but takes the dynamic way too far. I guess it's popular for a reason, people do enjoy romance tropes even when they don't make sense for the canon characters. I do wish it was sometimes easier to find IC versions of the "vulnerable badass character" storyline.

Absolutely have had this issue in past fandoms, one especially where A dealt with dangerous situations basically on the daily and while sure from a real-world perspective the guy would need So Much Therapy, but in canon it's expected for his lot to get on with things. So fic that could explore that and let him have his vulnerable moments but still allow him to be the confident leader he is would have been great... I rarely if ever got this and instead had to wade through an endless stream of terrible, truly OOC woobie fic where A, being a grown adult, was treated almost like a toddler by his partner(who has issues in canon as well but ooho nooo, no, no, no B doesn't. B is the Perfectly Emotionally Stable caretaker to A despite having his own extensive baggage, like... the shit people?).

I like hurt/comfort myself but I can't read 90% of it because it devolves into shit like this and it's annoying because I do want a variant of it, just not what fandom produces most of the time.

The worst for me are characters in high-pressure careers (think first responders who regularly find themselves in life or death situations) and fandom writes them as helpless woobies who can't remember to feed themselves, go days without sleeping, and constantly fall into panic attacks. Character couldn't hold down their job if they were that much of a wreck!

"it's just a cold" fics are so good for this, but i so rarely get them
