That sounds messed up.

It is, kinda. Her family is one of the poorest in the village and she often complains about her kids going hungry or having nothing but cabbage, etc. Her husband is away at sea for most of the story, and she's pregnant and relies upon her oldest child (a son) to work manual labor jobs and hand over his wages. She promises to use it to buy food for the younger kids, but then usually spends it on beer or other stupid schemes. At no point is it ever suggested that she's an alcoholic, BTW, not even in appropriate terms for that time period.

Because she's forever drinking their income, she can't pay bills and has to hide from the bailiff. She's frequently bailed out by neighbors, the local magistrate, etc. but eventually because she won't stop spending their meager income on beer, she ends up carted off to jail/the workhouse, leaving her teenaged son to work full time and care for three younger siblings. People express exasperation and disapproval about her habits, but always forgive her because she's... *checks notes* ...jolly and makes people laugh? Nobody ever says she's a bad mother. She never even gets a proper chewing out for being such an irresponsible idiot who's going to ruin her family. It's truly bizarre.

I adore this book and have read it a couple times...I don't remember this character. HRM! I must do a re-read.

I remember her reunion with her sailor husband but nothing else.
