The situation in Israel has revealed that a disturbing amount of people want an excuse to be bloodthirsty. They have no real desire to end conflict; what they want, instead, is a "good" conflict, featuring a "morally clean" enemy, so that they can give vent to their worst impulses.

Some of this was visible at the start of Russia-Ukraine war, but it's really gone into overdrive with this one.
