I've been there, shipped a man/woman friendship in a show but never wanted it to be canon because it never felt like it would naturally transition from friends to lovers... then the show put them together in the last season and it was bad. It's the only time it's happened to me but the fear is a real one and if it's been strictly platonic the entire time it can throw off the rest of the show.

But can for sure ship it in fanon while loving their canon friendship, there's nothing hypocritical about that because fandom is for exploring different ways a relationship/character could go if you want.
