After he died, everybody was trying to call him the lyricist of our generation. I was a fan of the band, but even I was like "Er, NO."

I remember that, because there were a few fans holding memorials and stuff saying things like that, but music had fragmented so much that there were a lot of people even within grunge going "er, no." I think it was the mainstream media trying to push that idea because they were already so deep into trying to define GenX as disaffected slackers that anything which fed into the narrative was their bread and butter.
