With a brush of her hand and a careful look, Mrs Peacock drew the younger woman to the corner of the library. "Miss Scarlet," she murmured, "You and I need to confer. I -" It was an ugly thing to say, but given the circumstances - "I don't trust the others."
"And you trust me?" Miss Scarlet asked.
No, she thought. "More so than any other."
"Well. I feel so underrated." She smiled, all pearly teeth and vulgar red lipstick, and a sort of charm that Mrs Peacock hadn't had levelled at her since she'd passed her fortieth birthday. Miss Scarlet was smiling at her as if she were a man. "And why should I trust you?"
You shouldn't. "Me?" She fluttered a hand, as if this woman's brashness could be fanned away. But it was like the smoke-and-perfume scent in the air. It clung to her. Mrs Peacock felt like was inhaling Miss Scarlet's reckless abandon. "Why in the world would you distrust me?"
"Everyone's got something to hide." Miss Scarlet drew a long cigarette holder from her purse, and turned to a candle beside them for a light. She was almost too rosy and bright-eyed to be a smoker, but Mrs Peacock could feel the nicotine rush just by looking at her. "Don't you think?"
"Does that include you?"
"Of course." And now she was smiling at Mrs Peacock as if Mrs Peacock were a cream meringue. "But I think you're right. You and me should...pair up on this one. We can beat them if we play doubles."
"Why, if you don't trust me?" Her heart was racing, and she felt almost queasily warm.
"Because it's more fun that way," Miss Scarlet replied.
